In the past, when my little brother and I found a movie exciting, my father laughed at us. He also did that when we liked someone. The result? A depression and a psychosis.

It sounds strange, but many psychiatric problems have causes like this. It is very directly learned behavior. Because what do you do? You act 1) as if you never find anything exciting and 2) as if nothing matters to you. The consequence is that you also start living your life like that, feeling nothing anymore, and then everything becomes grey.

So it is a bit of a chicken-and-egg story. Because you have learned that nothing in life matters, you also start acting accordingly. Because it doesn't matter anyway. So the combination between what you have taught yourself and your behavior has such incredible consequences.

I think this also applies when you think that you are worth nothing, for example because you are part of a minority group. Because you believe that a little bit, you start behaving like that. And therefore, you actually become that.

If you pay really close attention, you can literally feel yourself pressing down an emotion or suppressing your voice within yourself.

Most psychiatric disorders are problems with connection.

Whether you have a broken connection between your emotions and food, whether you don’t see other people at all, whether you have lost the connection with your body, or whether you no longer understand the relationships between yourself and other people—it doesn’t really matter.

The point is that you can only solve these problems to a limited extent on your own. You also need other people.

What I personally find difficult about feeling is that you can easily switch your feelings off.

I don't feel good? Game.

I don't feel good? Alcohol.

I don't feel good? Social media.

The problem is that this can work for a year. It will probably work for five years. But after ten years, you're going to run into problems sooner or later.

Then you get: “I used to game all the time, and it made me feel better, but it doesn't work anymore.”

And because you already don't feel good, you start drinking much more, or whatever it is you use to escape. And then everything goes completely wrong.

But the original problem is switching your feelings off.

I went through a phase where I couldn't even feel whether it was warm or cold outside. That's how much I had switched my feelings off. That entire system had to start working again, and it has only really started to come back after years.

There is often a good reason why we don't want to feel. Many people grow up in difficult environments. You don't have a choice: you have to switch your feelings off, otherwise you won't survive.

Or you pretend you don't have any emotions at all — you act tougher than you really are. That's also a way of switching your feelings off.

There are no people who are never afraid. Really, there aren't.

Gamen.

Ik voel me niet fijn? Drank.

Ik voel me niet fijn? Social media.

You Need Both: A Tale of Learning

1. Starting with What Is Real

In some religions, they sometimes say something like: start from a place of self-love. Accept everything that is.

I don't agree with that. If you hate yourself, you should start from a place of self-hatred. Because that is what is real: what you actually feel, what is actually going on.

If you start with self-love, you're essentially lying to yourself.

2. We Live in Change Land

  • I'm going to work out now because I need to get fitter.
  • I need to lose weight now.
  • I need to learn this and that.

Everyone knows this, and of course, it works.

You just have to be careful not to spend every second in Change Land, because then things are never good as they are.

So try doing this for a few hours each week:

I love myself. Every feeling, every thought is exactly as it is supposed to be. I am not going to change anything.

If I want to jump, I jump. If I do something stupid, I do something stupid. Even my worst thoughts are perfect today. Exactly as they are supposed to be. If they had been different, that would have been wrong.

In religious terms, you could call this paradise. For a moment, you are not tempted by the snake telling you that one thought is good and another feeling is bad, and then making you run off and change everything again.

No. Today, I love myself, and I am exactly, in every fiber of my being, as I am supposed to be.

As it can only be on Sunday.

Was it always this perfect?

Yes, actually, it was.

3. Paradise

You are there.

Notes

  1. Starting with given starting point
  2. Rerouting starting point
  3. Arriving

Wij leven in veranderland

Religious people and atheists color their brains differently

Before I start: I’m not necessarily religious myself, but I do have a lot of respect for religious people because over the years they have come up with incredibly smart things, especially when it comes to life lessons and consciousness. In my eyes, this is also what religion actually is, but that aside.

I think not everyone understands that you can choose yourself in what way you fill your head with thoughts. Both directly (what information do I take in, what do I watch, what do I read) and indirectly.

Especially this last part is important.

What do (smart) religious people do?

They test every thought based on their own norms and values.

So you let every thought come up from your subconscious, and then you make a decision. This is often translated as ‘Judgement Day’ in religious terms. This is incredibly important, because thoughts want you to make a decision. Then they know what you think, and you can develop yourself as a person.

Thought comes up → decision → next thought

You weigh them and you choose. You can also do this with bigger chunks of thoughts at the same time (but that is more for advanced people).

With many atheists, I often get the feeling that they have absolutely no idea what they are doing. This often works fine too — a body is very intuitive — but you have to be careful that you don’t get yourself into trouble. Thoughts are extremely functional: you can also use them, for example, to investigate the state of your body. How healthy are my brains?

Sometimes I have 2 thoughts that ‘jam’ against each other. Then I look at which thoughts they are and why this happens. This is especially useful with psychotic symptoms, where often some emotions have been suppressed for too long. Or things involving suppressed sexuality.

What you really have to be careful with are movements like Buddhism (especially the Western interpretation), where things go so wrong when it comes to thinking that I don’t even know where to begin. By constantly focusing on your breathing, you actually confuse your body. Your body wants to talk to you, and you keep disturbing that by unnecessarily going to your breathing. Why would you do that?

You can’t actually leave the here and now. Yes, metaphorically, you can leave the moment, but you cannot literally leave the here and now. Thinking about things from the past is actually smart. By only being busy with meditating, you do stabilize yourself, but you develop yourself less easily as a person, because thoughts and learning go hand in hand.

There is also a beautiful lesson from nature in the story of Buddha. The man went and sat under a tree, got an ego trip, and thought he understood it. Do you see the metaphor?

Back to thoughts

What is not smart to do is to avoid certain thoughts or feelings for too long. You let them come, you think about them, you make a decision, or you say, “I can’t decide about this yet.”

With many things related to religion, I still don’t really know what I think about them. With many other things, I do. So you park some things, you don’t park others, and then you move on again.

If you had to bring back every single second and every single moment from the past, that would be annoying. A brain works very intelligently and in a structured way, and it has a good sense of timing.

Even more important than thoughts

Even more important than thoughts is that you are your entire body at the same time. Your brain is one part of that. And a thought is an even smaller part of it.

We live in a time where people do a lot with their heads. It is almost as if people think their head is the center of their body, which it isn’t.

That is why tips like “go to your feeling,” “go into your body,” and “make sure you live in your body” always work.

Gedachte komt omhoog → beslissing → volgende gedachte
