Some people live life as if they’re programming it. If you do something differently, you enter a different command — and naturally, you get a different outcome.
I went from being defensive and aggressive to being very loving. And that’s exactly the kind of response I started getting back. Try it yourself.
Moving from stable – unstable – stable
Apple – apple falls – apple lies
All thoughts jump to another position
I could get a different nose from the doctor, but I preferred my own.
I could take a pill for different thoughts, but I preferred my own.
I could take a pill to sit still, but I preferred to move.
I could get different feelings, but I preferred my own.
“Here,” says the doctor, “I have all sorts of things for you. I can do an operation to give you another nose, or different lips. I also have a set of pills: you can get different thoughts, or I have pills that make you sit perfectly still.”
“No thank you,” says Marie, “I’m fine just the way I am. I actually like that restlessness in myself. Where others sit still all day, I have a strong combustion engine. Vrrrooooom.”
Beweging van stabiel – instabiel – stabiel
Appel – appel valt – appel ligt
‘Nee, dank u,’ zegt Marie. Vrrroooeem.’
How to Rewire Yourself in AR States
When in an AR state, feelings of emotional unease and hunger can get mixed up. Sometimes you feel hungry, but it manifests as emotional distress — which can be very confusing.
The underlying feeling is stress, while in reality, your body just needs food. You can “hardcode” this backwards: go to that signal and rewire it so the proper signaling gets through.
In day-to-day life, this feels like:
“I feel that something is wrong. I feel extremely stressed, but I don’t know where the stress is coming from. It feels emotional.”
That feeling, in fact, is hunger.
How to Overcome AUT States
Go for overstimulation or understimulation. If the underlying cause is a wrong response to stimuli, it’s worth looking into that.
You need to look backwards.
There’s a reason a week has both a forward and a backward side. Sometimes you have to look back, and it’s easier to do that in short phases — for example, a few times a day, or once a week.
The point is: partly act, partly reflect.
