It's About the Journey

Let’s say we built a computer—an AI—that actually gives answers about this universe. We get all the answers we want.

And then what?

That’s the equivalent of putting somebody in a machine and that person comes out with a six-pack. You're missing the whole point. It was about the journey, about the things you learned during the process. It's not about the end result.

For me, the best moments in life are the moments in between. The moments when I’m biking somewhere, or sitting in a train. You are doing something, but you’re not. It’s in those moments—when you’re underway—that you understand: it’s about the journey.

It would actually be quite fun if we really got AGI, and it really said: it's about the journey.

Numbers Don’t Exist and Exist at the Same Time
A number is not something that exists in real life. There are no ‘1s’ flying around the room.

There is nothing wrong with beliefs. Beliefs are the most important things there are.

The problem with using numbers is that too much information gets lost. If you attach a number to objects—two apples, for example—you are going to run into problems.
There are no two identical apples; therefore, 1 + 1 is not really 2.
Or it is, minus all valuable information about the objects themselves.

If I say 1 + 1 is 2, and I take the 2 from the sum to another sum where I combine it with another 2, either all information about the four apples got lost, or we are talking about four non-existing labels. It can’t be both.
