Why the Chance of Rolling a 6 Isn’t Actually 1/6
Imagine you roll a die.
1 in 6 chance for each outcome, right? Of course not.
A meteorite could also fall and hit the die just as it's about to land on its edge.
In a relative sense, the chance is 1/6.
There's just as much chance of rolling a 1 as there is of rolling a 6.
So 1/6 only exists within the set of given outcomes.
But the absolute chance is always (slightly) less than 1/6—
Because something entirely different could happen.
